Salt, humidity, sunlight, intermittent immersion — the Gulf coast is brutal on resin floors. Marine-grade systems use zinc-rich primers, salt-spray-resistant epoxy and UV-stable polyurethane top-coats to last where ordinary floors fail in months.
The marine spec
| Layer | Spec | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Substrate | Shot-blasted to SA 2½ (steel) or CSP-4 (concrete) | Mill-scale or laitance = adhesion failure |
| Primer | Zinc-rich epoxy, 60 µm | Cathodic protection, anti-corrosion |
| Body coat | Salt-spray epoxy, 200 µm | Tested to ISO 12944 C5-M (marine high) |
| Top coat | UV-stable aliphatic PU, 60 µm | No yellowing or chalking under Gulf sun |
| Optional | Anti-fouling, R12 slip | For wet zones & vessel-contact areas |
Where Gulf marine floors get specified
- Shipyards & dry-docks — Hamad Port Qatar, Drydocks Dubai, Mussafah Abu Dhabi
- Marina pontoons & piers — Dubai Marina, Lusail, The Pearl-Qatar
- Offshore module assembly yards — Mussafah, Ras Laffan
- Coastal industrial facilities — desalination, gas processing, port-side warehouses
- Boat boatyards — Jebel Ali, Hamad Port
The five Gulf-specific failure modes
- Salt crystals lifting coatings — always specify SA 2½ blast clean and fresh-water rinse before primer.
- UV chalking — non-aliphatic top-coats turn powdery within 18 months. Insist on aliphatic PU.
- Cathodic corrosion under coating — zinc-rich primer is non-negotiable on steel.
- Humidity blistering — high RH at coating time creates micro-blisters; we monitor RH below 80% during application.
- Anti-fouling failure — boat-contact areas need anti-fouling top-coat refreshed every 3–4 years.
What an ISO 12944 C5-M spec actually means
ISO 12944 C5-M is the highest corrosion class for offshore and marine high-salt environments. The spec defines:
- Surface preparation grade (SA 2½ minimum)
- Total dry film thickness (320 µm minimum)
- Number of coats and product types
- Expected life-to-first-major-maintenance: 15+ years
